John went into law after studying philosophy at Bristol University. He completed law school at the University of the West of England, and then trained with leading Bristol firm Veale Wasbrough qualifying in 1992. Since then he has specialised in family law.

 

In 1993 he joined Bristol firm Foster and Partners, and became a partner four years later. With his partners he took the firm forward to become the leading niche specialist family law firm in the city. In 2014 John and his partners sold Foster and Partners to national firm Simpson Millar. He became a partner of that firm, initially leading the family law team in Bristol and Cardiff, and then going on to become national head of family law, with responsibility for teams across the whole country. He left in 2018 to found Apple Tree Family Law, committed to providing the very best family law advice in a modern, client focused and cost-effective way. 

 

John is a true expert in divorce and family law. He is particularly recognised and skilled in resolving the financial issues which arise from separation and divorce. Over the years he has advised all sorts of people including farmers and business owners and professionals such as doctors, accountants, lawyers, teachers and dentists.

 

He is well known, and confidently recommended by other professionals, including solicitors, barristers and accountants, for his knowledge of the law, his skill as a negotiator, and as a calm and persuasive advocate. He has particular expertise in cases involving businesses, professional partnerships and complex pensions.

 

John is a trained Collaborative lawyer.

Outside of work, John helps his partner to run a small farm. He also loves sailing, riding, bell ringing and good food.
